What is Orthodontics?
Most people know orthodontics as the specialized field of dentistry that focuses on straightening teeth. However, it involves much more. Orthodontics also focuses on correcting facial and jaw irregularities, the improvement of chewing and breathing functions, as well as the support of proper tooth and jaw growth for children.
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
Our fees at MBO are based upon many factors including severity, estimated duration of treatment, treatment goals, and types of appliances used. Although we are unable to give fee estimates without a consultation, in general our fees are highly competitive within the current marketplace for orthodontia.
If you have dental insurance, we can help verify your orthodontic coverage and subtract that from your treatment fee.
When compared to other personal expenditures such as a gym membership and regular visits to the beauty salon or spa, orthodontic treatment is considerably affordable – especially when you take into account the interest free payment plans that we offer.
Can I use my FSA (Flexible Spending Account) for Invisalign or braces for me or my child?
Yes.
Why should I have my teeth straightened?
Crooked teeth leads to bad breath, tooth decay, gum disease, improper chewing and digestion, and tooth loss. Having straight teeth is healthier, makes your smile more attractive, and ultimately leads to an increase in self confidence.
Do braces hurt?
Not so much. There may be times where you feel sensitivity or soreness on your teeth, but most times you will not experience any discomfort at all. Also, there are no needles used during orthodontic procedures.
How do braces straighten teeth (How does it work)?
Braces are placed on your teeth and an archwire, attached to each brace by a ligature tie, is used to gently guide your teeth into their proper positions.

Why should I choose an orthodontic specialist as opposed to my general dentist?
Dr. Zhu, a board certified orthodontist from Columbia University has three additional years of specialized training beyond dental school. She is an expert at moving teeth, helping jaws develop properly, and ensuring that your teeth remain in their new positions.
Your teeth and face will be permanently changed by orthodontic treatment – therefore, it is very important that treatment be done with a specialist.
Can I get a dental cleaning while I am in braces?
Yes. You should keep your regular dental check-ups and scheduled cleanings with your general dentist while you are in braces. Your dentist has special instruments that can clean around the braces and along your gum lines.
Will wearing Invisalign aligners affect my speech?
Similar to other orthodontic treatments, Invisalign aligners may temporarily affect the speech of some people, and you may have a slight lisp for a day or two. However, as your tongue gets used to having aligners in your mouth, any lisp caused by the aligners should disappear.
Will having treatment significantly affect my lifestyle?
Aside from having to spend a bit more time cleaning your teeth and slight changes to your diet, you will notice that not much has changed. Like with all things new, there may be a slight adjustment period during the beginning. But soon, you’ll realize that you can still eat most of your favorite foods, play musical instruments, and participate in sports – except for boxing.
For young adults and professionals, there are discreet treatment options available – clear sapphire braces, lingual braces, and Invisalign.
Am I too old for braces?
No. You are never too old to have great looking teeth.
